Brandon Flowers: 'My wife and I read this at the same time, but separately, and I have such fond memories of it. I’d never been so excited to go and see what’s going to happen next in any book, so this got me hooked on Steinbeck. I have a small, name-dropping side story about it, too. We all associate Bruce Springsteen with Steinbeck, but he revealed that he’d probably read just about all of them except East of Eden, which is kind of mind-blowing because it’s one you’d really associate with him. I found an early edition and sent him a copy and told him to read it, because it had such a big impact on me.'
