More than perhaps any other record of the time, this one captures the essence of the riots that started on June 28th with its motivational lyrics like "get off your knees, ya gotta be strong" and "ya gotta take a stand." When he heard about how the song was embraced by gay audiences, he told Billboard magazine "We never expected the song do more than be a story from our own lives.
