(mostly just maps) first impressions (tap “read more” down below)
while i will say that 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 of iOS 15’s new features are either an improvement or a return to form for apple, two things bother me, particularly about maps, that have bothered me for years now.
a. the fact that maps still has this goofy-ass landscape layout with all the info shoved in an awkward box taking up nearly the entire left side of the screen, continuing to completely defeat the purpose of even using landscape mode, which at one point in the distant past actually provided a substantially wider map view with info presented more tidy at the top and bottom. why apple continues to push this idiotic, off-balance UI that does nothing other than make me want to go back to portrait mode and deal with that, remains utterly beyond me as a designer. it’s terrible.
b. apple’s much-touted “smarter” transit / directions system that supposedly takes into account things like elevation changes sure doesn’t seem to be apparent either. it’s still telling me to walk up a 7-story cliff-face to get to coit tower’s bus stop (which i specifically asked for directions to the stop rather than the tower in an attempt to idiot-proof things) when the much simpler option is taking the 8 / 30 / 45 to the 39 bus that actually goes to that stop and is the only way any reasonable person where i live would get up there.
oh well. still better than google maps. and supposedly it finally lets me sort via transit agency now which is also helpful. still, outside of the map itself looking snazzier, i’m wholly underwhelmed so far. but i’ll still keep using it anyway so 🤷♂️ just bugged as a designer. i could do a better job. apple’s great 99% of the time but then they always have that 1% that’s just like “WTF WHY”. maps’ UI is definitely that.
