For VERO Full Frame this week, we have the pleasure of sharing a series of breathtaking images and story by Cristina (@mitty) Mittermeier.

Born in Mexico City, Cristina is an award-winning photographer, marine biologist, and writer. She is best known for her early work with Indigenous communities across the globe and her more recent underwater images showcasing our ocean’s biodiversity.

As a child, Cristina formed an early and unshakable connection to the sea through books on marine animals and the thrilling escapades of pirates.

Her passion for ocean life drove her to pursue an education in the marine sciences at ITESM (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey) where she studied fisheries. After witnessing the devastating impact of commercial fishing on Mexico’s ocean ecosystems, Cristina chose to become a researcher for marine conservation until the fateful day she first picked up a camera.

She quickly discovered the power of visual storytelling in rallying support for critical conservation issues and began to charter her own path as a photographer. She founded the International League of Conservation Photographers in 2005 before becoming a National Geographic photographer.

In 2014, she launched SeaLegacy with her partner Paul Nicklen and later co-founded Only One to protect and restore the health of our planet’s marine habitats.

Today Cristina continues to deliver powerful ocean stories to a global stage and works to generate support for science-backed solutions to our planet’s greatest threats. Her images draw viewers in closer to some of the world’s most remote ecosystems, submerging them into the heart of our planet’s complex web of life.

Throughout her 35-year career, Cristina has revolutionized the field of conservation photography and her use of visual storytelling to inspire global action has impacted an entire generation of aspiring artists— especially young women.
