‘How Many’ is the latest musical salvo from the Hackney-based artist’s forthcoming EP ‘That’s the Thing About Time’ (Part One), due December 6.

The three-track project is the result of a period of self-reflection for J Appiah, one that allowed him to fully embrace his art and move beyond the constraints of others. Using the concept of time to demonstrate life’s journey, ‘That’s the Thing About Time’ will encourage us all as human beings to be present and conscious of the days we have. To do the things we want to do more of and to remember the important things in life.

The new single ‘How Many’ explores the need to move past the stress and strife of daily life and seek out simple pleasures and emotional relief. Appiah weaves his words around a potent blend of psychedelia and raw funk to bring instrumental movement and illumination to the song’s message. The track was made with producer Barnabas Poffley, who provided its other-worldly synth sample, and draws upon J Appiah’s varied influences across electronic, indie, soul, and beyond.

How Many’ was written after an old friend teased me about my songs being sad. So, I wrote something about needing to appreciate the small things. How many things, whether they be distractions and vices, do I need to be happy? I need to learn to be happy. I need to learn to smile.. And I need to think positive. It’s a new day. I want and deserve to be happy.

J Appiah’s latest music run is his first since 2021, which saw him release a trio of singles, including ‘Breath,’ ‘Where's Your Heart Gone’ and ‘Bitter X Sweet.’ In the years that followed, he toured the world as a member of Damon Albarn’s band Gorillaz, performing in 24 countries throughout Europe, Australia, and North America, including festivals that included Coachella. The ‘That’s the Thing About Time’ EP came to fruition following J Appiah’s time on the road, with the project completed during an extended period spent in Japan.
