J Appiah
Longest Saddest Affair
J Appiah's new single paves the way for the Hackney-based artist’s forthcoming EP ‘That’s the Thing About Time’ (Part One) on Nov 29th.
The three-track project is the result of a period of self-reflection for J Appiah, one that allowed him to fully embrace his art and move beyond the constraints of others. Using the concept of time to demonstrate life’s journey, ‘That’s the Thing About Time’ will encourage us all as human beings to be present and conscious of the days we have. To do the things we want to do more of and to remember the important things in life.
New single ‘LSA’ is an inspired take on the circle of life, from birth to death and beyond. It was written whilst the mother of a close friend of J’s was battling cancer (as was a lot of the EP) which found him contemplating life’s bittersweet journey. Leaning into psychedelia to demonstrate the trip we all take on planet earth - and providing a playful nod to the hallucinogenic drug LSD - ‘LSA’ offers melancholic beauty with its meditative sound and soft, confessional lyrics. The track was made with producer Barnabas Poffley who provided its other-worldly synth sample, and draws upon J Appiah’s varied influences across electronic, indie, soul and beyond.
I was thinking about life as a journey that starts with innocence and grows intense, often feeling like survival. I called it ‘LSA’—‘Longest and Saddest Affair’—because life can be both beautiful and sad. Remember, this life is the only one you get, so keep your eyes on the prize.
