Until The Ribbon Breaks
New Album
'V I S I T O R' has landed.
After a series of brilliant and enormously successful singles, UNTIL THE RIBBON BREAKS opens an exciting new era of innovation with the much-anticipated ‘V I S I T O R,’ the act’s first full-length collection of new songs since their eponymous 2018 opus.
The project is enhanced by the release of a new sterling track, ‘HUMAN.’
Working within a hauntingly compelling electronic-pop framework, UTRB mastermind PETE LAWRIE WINFIELD built ‘V I S I T O R’ during what he describes as a period of
Part of the joy Winfield experienced while writing was setting his mind free in ways he hadn’t in a long while. It’s a process that has resulted in ‘HUMAN,’ one of the most emotionally resonant tracks on ‘V I S I T O R.’ Underlined by insinuating percussion and infectious layers of keyboards, the song delves into what the artist calls “a world that sometimes feels hell-bent on being a river of revenge and punishment and shame.” He continues,
"The first verse is like a literal story of the second you are born. Within the grand scheme of existence – and within minutes – you're expected to be someone who has answers and knows what they want to do. I wanted to say that life is hard enough. Can we just pretend for a second that we don't have to do all of that? It’s about joyful nihilism."
‘V I S I T O R’ is a sonic renaissance that completes a trinity of the extraordinary previous collections ‘A Lesson Unlearnt’ (2015) and ‘Until the Ribbon Breaks’ (2018). The new project began to gradually unfold in April 2023 with the release of ‘Everything Else but Rain,’ featuring harmonies by alt-pop doyennes Lucius. The track earned impassioned support on Zane Lowe’s highly influential Apple Music program, as well as winning nods from the press, including Rolling Stone.
The rest of 2023 saw the impact of several equally well-received singles, starting with the moody and atmospheric ‘Red Skies,’ which paired Winfield with rising Colombian pop siren LaPardo. The two soon reunited for a hypnotically percussive re-imagination of the song, retitled ‘Cielos Rojos.’ Autumn brought the anthemic ‘Nature Mother,’ featuring Nashville singer/songwriter Emoni Wilkins. Upon release, the track won acclaim and support from BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio Wales, and KCRW. Among the many high-profile kudos UTRB and Winfield have received was from Adam Walton of BBC Radio Wales, who proclaimed, “he’s one of the most remarkable artists that Wales has produced, sonically speaking, over the last decade and a half.”
Adding to his momentum, Winfield recently teased material from ‘V I S I T O R’ during a performance at this year’s hugely influential SXSW festival.
Playing SXSW was an incredibly special experience in a multitude of ways. Not only was it my first show in 5 years, but it was also my first show ever playing sober. To finally be present and share my art – and to not have that voice of doubt in my head was magnificent. It was so satisfying to just take my hands off the wheel and allow things to unfold as they may.
In the days leading up to the release of ‘V I S I T O R,’ Winfield took to the iconic Dreamland Margate stage in Kent, England, for the Margate Summer Series on June 8. The prestigious event will also feature performances by headliners – drum’n’bass legends Rudimental – with ShyFX, Charlotte Plank and others. The Margate Summer Series is part of the innovative “Soundcrash” UK concert series, bringing epic music acts to local outdoor parks. VERO and Until the Ribbon Breaks are joining Soundcrash for the June 8th show, which is directed from the iconic Dreamland amusement park and entertainment center, which is based on a traditional English seaside funfair located in Margate, Kent.
